Boston Marathon Wiki Edit #2
Last night I decided to make my second edit to the Boston Marathon Wiki considering last Monday was "Marathon Monday", marking the 110th running of the historic race. While the wiki is definitely a work in progress, I was shocked that it did not mention one aspect of the Boston Marathon that definitely distinguishes it from other marathons: the fact that individuals with disabilities and impairments are able to competitively compete in the event.
In 1975, one wheelchair racer competed in the race and was able to finish the entire race. Since then, the Boston Marathon has been dedicated to providing disabled persons an event that can test their athleticism and bring their divisions to a new level of excellence. Currently, the Boston Marathon has three divisions besides the traditional men's and women's running division. These include a push rim wheelchair division, a visually impaired/blind division, and a mobility impaired program. In my wiki edit, I discussed how these divisions still have qualifying times and numerous rules and regulations, but have truly become as much a part of "Marathon Monday" as the actual running races. When I used to attend the marathon, I was extremely inspired by the determination these athletes demonstrated. I think it is incredible that the Boston Marathon offers these divisions to help show the world that individuals with disabilities should not be pushed to the side, but should have the opportunity to compete if they so desire.
